Yoona

She used to run the largest bakery chain on the island, before Alice vanished for 4 months and died. Once Alice died, she asked for Yoona to take her position as interim leader of The Grasslands. Very close with Alice prior to her death.

Alice

Alice used to be the leader of the Grasslands region. Since it's the biggest region on Theisle, she's easily the most influential person on the island. She's a very grounded person, and was definitely a ruler who always did what was best 'for the people'. She made a lot of enemies this way though, something that Yoona suspects played its part in her death. She was very close with Etta and Mai (within the 'leader' circle) and was childhood friends with 'Yoona'.

Mai

The main antagonist of the series. Probably the most tragic character here, although all of them are tragic in their own right. Canonically the most beautiful person in-universe. She's like, the Audrey Hepburn / Adriana Lima / Lucy Liu / whatever of the Umbra universe. Unfortunately, this means people often underestimate her, despite the fact that she built her city from nothing. Once Alice died, she was never the same. Now she pursues the heart of a mermaid in order to heal herself, Etta, and bring back Alice.

Etta

The only melanin rep in this cast (so far). She's meant to be this very muscley, buff person, but I worry that my art skills don't give that impression. She's somewhere between Bisky from HxH and Mirko from MHA in terms of muscley-ness. She's the leader of Naka'az. She faced a lot of sexism and was constantly de-legitimised when she first came to power, as she refused to marry and give her power to some guy. There was so much backlash that they were considering abolishing the monarchy. She had some great people in her corner though, and, quite frankly, the data doesn't lie. Things in Naka'az were probably the best they've ever been under her rule.

You can't see it here, but Etta covers one of her eyes due to [SPOILERS] (but let's be real you can kind of infer why). Check it out on my Art Fight - linked above. The reason I mention it is that... fire characters always have one-eyed trauma. And, this wasn't even intentional, I only clocked this fact like, two months ago (Etta's existed since 2023, for context). Maybe it's just the natural order of things?

Maeve

This girl is evil. She isn't an antagonist in the story sense of the word, but she's annoying as heck. She's like the Umbra version of a populist leader. Despite being the youngest of the six, she plays an instrumental part in why everything deteriorates to its current state. She's weirdly popular with the more nationalistic, militant side of the population, and her age means that Glitra's young population has been the biggest percentage in right-wing spaces for the past three years. Despite only coming into power due to her parents' illness(es) (Glitra has a weird political system that I'm in the process of working out), she's projected to win the next election by a landslide (that is, if she doesn't eliminate elections altogether in the next three years).

Aya

Having said that, I've recently started to prefer drawing her with her hair down, since it's a lot easier. Unfortunately, it looks like I've completely ripped off a certain figure skater's hair... I promise this design was made in 2023.

Aya is Maeve's estranged sister. She has a more traditional backstory in that there was a lot of pressure put on her to succeed her father as leader of the party / kingdom or whatever this system is. So she ran away. Maeve hates her kind of... Now she works at Yoona's bakery, and has taken over since Yoona got promoted.
